A terrible fiery accident that involved a big rig and loss of life on I-64 in Newport News, VA has illustrated how one apparent act of careless or reckless driving can cause a massive accident.
On January 18, 2013 at about 5:06 a.m. Virginia State Police were called to a motor vehicle accident on westbound Interstate 64 at Lee Hall Avenue, according to spokeswoman Michelle Anaya.
Troopers found three vehicles to be involved in a fiery accident with injuries. Two vehicles were on fire. I’m sad to report the accident led to a death as well as a HAZMAT spill on the I-64.
My thoughts as a Newport News wrongful death lawyer, are with the family of the victim who is yet to be identified.
Anaya said a female driver lost control of her vehicle, “ran off the road to the right shoulder and struck a guardrail. Her 2005 Nissan ASL rested on the right lane and shoulder of the interstate.”
She got out of her vehicle and attempted to wave traffic down for assistance. But a 1999 Kenworth fully loaded tractor trailer that was traveling westbound I-64 and was unable to stop in time to avoid the accident.
The tractor trailer hit the 2005 Nissan, then lost control and crashed into another vehicle, a 1999 Buick, pinning it against the guardrail. The truck and the Buick were quickly engulfed in flames.
“Troopers and Rescue responded quickly to the scene. Not only was the accident involving injuries, a confirmed fatality, but also a hazmat spill that caused the westbound lanes to be shut down and traffic to be rerouted for approximately six hours,” said Anaya. The female driver was charged with reckless driving. Alcohol did not play a part in the crash.
It’s not the first time I have reported on how a big rig has hit a stranded vehicle in Hampton Roads with devastating results.
If you are hit by a big rig you may have a case to file a claim for your injuries. Family members of a deceased motorist may have grounds for a wrongful death lawsuit.
