By John Cooper, Virginia Tractor Trailer Accident Attorney
Being trapped between two big rigs is a nightmare scenario on the roads of Virginia. I was saddened to read how this very scenario claimed the life of a driver this week in Chesterfield County, VA.
ABC 12 reported on how the accident happened as investigators responded to a crash at the same location on Route 288.
The pickup truck was hit from behind by a tractor trailer and pushed into another tractor trailer in front of it. It then ricocheted off the second tractor trailer and struck a parked car that was in the right lane stopped because of the previous crash.
It’s not clear why this pickup truck driver was hit by a tractor trailer and few details were released on the death. However, people who commented on the news story pointed out the area where the crash occurred was a particularly dangerous stretch of road.
“It’s one of the most dangerous places in Chesterfield County,” one comment read.” I travel through that area every work day. You just pray to get onto Hull Street without getting rear ended when the traffic behind you goes from 75 to 0 mph in just a few short feet.”
When a truck driver hits a smaller vehicle in front of a tractor trailer, the consequences can often be devastating, as proved to be the case in this crash. Usually the driver of a car or pick-up sustains the most serious injuries. My thoughts are with the family of the victim in the crash in Chesterfield.
A truck driver and a truck company can be liable for injuries or a wrongful death caused by a rear-end collision. All cases are different and we cannot guarantee the same results, but our law firm has represented many families who have lost loved ones in trucking accidents in Virginia.
In one case a commercial truck rear-ended a passenger vehicle on I-64 in Norfolk, Virginia. Our client was a passenger in the car that was hit, which was traveling slowly after a tire problem. Both vehicles caught on fire. Our client was trapped within the passenger vehicle and tragically lost his life. His family received a $3.5 million settlement.
Last year the family of a man who was hit and killed after being hit from behind by a box truck in Hampton Roads received $1.5 million in a settlement.
